Beaches

San Jose del Cabo beach

San Jose del Cabo beaches are laid out much different than most beach resorts. The downtown area is actually about a mile away from the beach.  Also, visitor should be aware that some of the beaches may not be suitable for swimming with currents and undertow.

El Estero or Estuary Beach

This San Jose del Cabo beach borders along the San Jose Estuary. Here fresh water from the Rio San Jose combines with the salt water of the Sea of Cortez.  The estuary consists of about 125 acres and is home to over 350 species of wildlife and plant life.  Estuary Beach is a great place to bird watch or simply explore. It is located between the InterContinental Presidente Los Cabos All Inclusive Resort and La Playita.

Hotel Beach or Playa Hotelera

Hotel Beach is the closest beach to downtown San Jose del Cabo. It is generally not safe for swimming, but its central location makes it popular. It is nice to take a walk along this San Jose del Cabo beach or engage in one of the many beach activities like games of volleyball or making sand castles.

La Playita or the Little Beach

To the east of San Jose del Cabo and the Estuary Beach is La Playita or Pueblo la Playa which is a popular starting point for the areas panga fleet. While La Playita is not good for swimmers, it’s a great place to see a little local flavor and watch the fishermen bring in their daily catches.

Playa Costa Azul or Blue Coast Beach

Costa Azul is located by an area of resort condos and is the most popular beach in San Jose del Cabo. It is also the safest beach in San Jose del Cabo for those looking to swim. At the very west end of this long stretch of beach you will find one San Jose’s popular surfing breaks.

Beaches in the East Cape, Cabo San Lucas and the Corridor

To the east of La Playita lie miles and miles of deserted beaches, in an area known as the East Cape. This stretch of the shoreline of the Sea of Cortez is getting more popular yearly and for good reason. The dirt road that lingers along this stretch of beach is famous for being in terrible shape, although the government has been promising to pave it for years.

There are also many quiet beaches and coves located in the Corridor between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas. Cabo San Lucas also has many beaches you can visit from San Jose del Cabo as well.

San Jose Del Cabo Beach Tips

  • Bring sunscreen! The sun is pretty strong in San Jose Del Cabo. If you are visiting the estuary, you should wear biodegradable sunscreen in order to avoid contaminating the water and harming the species that live there.
  • Make sure to pay attention to the weather advisories if you are swimming. Make sure the beach you are at doesn’t have strong currents or undertow.
  • Always bring a buddy with you or let someone know where you are going if you are going to be swimming off the beaches in San Jose del Cabo.
  • If you are looking for beaches that are more deserted and less lenient on dress code, rent a car and head up the East Coast for some pure and isolated beaches.
